Clear Communication is the key
A successful accounting-client relationship is built on clear, frequent communication and proactiveness. Characteristics to look for if you are shopping for a new accountant or evaluating your current accounting staff:
1.) They provide financial reports on a regular basis, and can explain those reports within the context of your company's operational environment.
2.) They follow up regularly with any discrepancies they find or questions they have regarding your company's books. If you don't hear from them often, consider initiating a meeting with them yourself to get updated financials.
3.) They have direct contact with your CPA (assuming they are not also your CPA). Direct communication with the CPA can help clear up any year-end issues prior to tax filing. They will also need to follow up on year-end journal entries provided by the CPA.
4) You should not have to chase down your bookkeeper for answers! Your accounting staff should be readily available to answer questions, and have a quick response turn around time. Unless they are on vacation or ill, you should hear back from them within a day or two (at least with an "I'll look into this issue and get back to you within x amount of time.").
